Movie projection on television. Pan and scan
Almost all movies that were made before 1950 were registered on camera in the format 4:3 or 1.33:1. When television in the 50's of the previous century reached the general public the same size was chosen for projection of films on television. But feature movies in those days were made in another format. An interesting analysis on the “pan and scan” to the television format can be seen in this documentary “the letterbox”.
